OPEN OCEAN

90% VESSEL CLASSIFICATION ACCURACY ON THE OPEN OCEAN

The vast expanse of the open ocean makes it almost impossible to monitor all maritime activity of the ships and vessels that use its waterways. ‘Dark vessel’ activity (vessels with AIS tracking turned off) and light and weather conditions are just some of the limitations that cause inaccuracy and restrictions in obtaining full intelligence from the open ocean.

This is a particular issue for the world’s military forces who provide security and defence for their country within the ocean waters.

Military Aircraft Carriers, Intelligence gathering ships and the transporters of global energy supplies live, transit or operate in open ocean. These are strategic assets and knowing the location of them significantly enhances your strategic situational awareness and increases decision time.

Using SAR (synthetic aperture radar) technology that works in all weather and light conditions we provide fast and accurate detection and classification of ships and vessels (inc dark vessels) in the open ocean. We provide near real-time monitoring in hard-to-reach areas on a global scale.

HOW WE DO IT

SATIM has built a highly accurate simulator for generating synthetic SAR signatures. The simulator allows us to simulate a SAR signature of any object and any SAR system.

Thanks to the simulator, we can add new types of vessels (e.g, a new type, class group or an unusual type) to train our AI model and to be classified within days.

OUR RESULTS

Our AI-based software solution is capable of providing over 90% accurate vessel classification of different vessel types among which there are Military Aircraft Carriers, Intelligence gathering ships and the transporters of global energy supplies on the open ocean.

What is SAR?

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a powerful remote sensing technology bouncing microwave signals off the Earth’s surface to detect physical properties.

It is used to create a high-resolution two-dimensional representation of the imaging area.

Imagery can be captured day and night, without the usual visibility limitations of optical data and is well suited to monitoring extensive areas.

   Benefits of SAR

  • All Weather
  • Day and night
  • High spatial resolution
  • High temporal resolution
  • Global reach
